Deck Staining & Refinishing in Durham Region

Refinishing restores the look of weathered wood and adds years of protection against Ontario's UV, snow, and freeze-thaw. We prep properly — clean, sand, dry — then apply the right stain for your wood and sun exposure, so the finish lasts instead of peeling.

Semi-transparent stain being absorbed into deck boards, golden hour light

How often should a wood deck be stained?

A horizontal surface in full sun typically needs re-staining every two to three years; shaded or covered decks can go four to five years. We use semi-transparent stains for cedar and pressure-treated wood so you can see grain while protecting the fibres.

Why do some deck stains peel after one season?

Peeling is almost always a prep problem — stain applied over dirt, mill glaze, or damp wood can't bond. We power-wash, apply a wood brightener, let the wood dry to the right moisture content, and lightly sand before staining. It's slower, but the finish holds.

Can you change the colour of an existing deck?

Yes, within reason. We can strip an old failing stain and apply a new semi-transparent or solid stain. Moving from dark to light is harder and may require a solid stain to cover evenly.

Deck Staining & Refinishing — common questions.

What stain brands do you use?+

We use proven penetrating-oil and hybrid stains suited to Canadian climate, including TWP, Sikkens, and Olympic, chosen based on your wood species and sun exposure.

Most stains are foot-traffic dry in 24–48 hours and fully cured in 72 hours. We'll advise based on the specific product and forecast.

Do you refinish composite decks?+

Composite doesn't require staining, but we can clean, brighten, and address scratches or faded boards. We'll tell you if refinishing is the right move for your material.
